Charismata

Many start out by receiving their faith in a tentative manner, and so receive a "quiet" faith and experience.  Given time, faith may increase and some of these begin to hunger for the more active Holy Spirit and Power that they have heard about. The work of Salvation. When He comes to dwell with those who are reserved and not very trusting---He minds his Ps and Qs. He will politely stay in the room you have allocated to Him, and so you will not see much of Him. When you finally begin to trust Him more, you get to see Him more. You will often see His sparkling and magnetic personality. His gifts of fruit and flowers will come to grace your table at times. Many will be glad to come and share His bounty with you. Healing. Miracles. Revelation. Deliverances. Gifts. You may come to share in them all. The work of Sanctification  You formally give Him full ownership and control of your household. He provides the groceries and enlarges the dwelling so that it becomes an appropriate dwelling for a King. He holds court and celebrations in this palace whenever He feels like. His palace and love-feasts are yours also. His Peace rules without exception for He guards and protects His own. This is an idealized view. In fact there are no cookie cutter experiences.  They vary according to faith and gifting. Some receive their faith in an overwhelming flood with obvious signs following right from the start. However, regardless of how you gain it, those that are seen to have the Holy Spirit within stand out in churches that see quiet faith as the norm.  For this reason, we began to be called "Charismatic" since the unfamiliar magnetic and convicting power of the Holy Spirit was shining through! Luke 3:16  and Matt. 3:11 "John (the Baptist) answered, saying to all, "I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire."  Did you notice how sweeping this sentence is? John the Baptist by revelation touches on the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the Upper Room, the End Times work as well as the central judicial role of Jesus at the Great White Throne judgement all in one sentence! In this brief statement we see that both the Holy Spirit and the sanctifying, heart-cleansing Fire were initially poured out in the Upper Room on 120 souls Jesus had first carefully prepared for this double work. They had all wholly consecrated themselves to Him. Before this event, Jesus had the Holy Spirit dwelling within but nobody else.  Old Testament believers had the Spirit resting "upon", not within them... (The Holy Spirit is the Holy Spirit, while the Fire is His fearsome cleansing fire of judgment that burns away all dross, leaving the heart pure, white and in His Rest.  All your former boastful hopes and ambitious dreams as a Christian are now less than ashes: burned to nothingness by the glory of His grace. This brings light and freedom to the previously hidden parts.) But in our quest for entire sanctification/His Rest we cannot forget that initial salvation and everything connected with it is the first work that must be accomplished in the life.  All the old-time Holiness preachers when preaching to the mixed multitudes preached a salvation message with allusions to the subsequent work of heart purification sprinkled here and there.  Those who hungered after it were counseled separately.  Most of the explicit Holiness preaching contained on this website occurred at specialized summer camps or special meetings that were called to direct the saved into His Rest.  So these too, were prepared souls that gathered. The books made use of on this website were written explicitly for the scattered saved souls who were hungering for His best. Brown Faulty Foundations My ideas regarding Pentecostalism have always been rather conventional.  However, a couple of years ago in the course of my continuing research for this website, I made a couple of shocking discoveries that go along way to explain a few of the disturbing things we keep seeing in our spiritual family.  Asuza Street History You know how it is.  There is his story, there is her story, and then the story which is seldom told  -the story that is in between somewhere -and near the unvarnished truth.  On the way to creating a satisfactory History, a great deal of time has to elapse because the various factions involved in events often do not get a chance to have their side of the story told -especially if they were on the losing side. The perceived winners in a conflict usually are so busy boasting that the actual truth is lost.. This has very much been the case regarding Pentecostal History. But now the facts are out! The Asuza Street Revival started among the Holiness people, but it was simply overwhelmed by waves of spiritually hungry Baptists who knew nothing about Holiness and failed to learn about it.  But they did want more of the Spirit, so some "enterprising" souls staged a vicious and unprincipled church coup  d'etat...... Asuza Street Theology If you will look in your Pastor's study you will find two kinds of theology text books: regular Baptist Theology and regular Baptist Theology with a Pentecostal veneer.  The latter are used in the Pentecostal seminaries to train ministers like yours. So, you are a Baptist and didn't even know it!  Does this matter?  Yes, it most certainly does. Holiness-denying Gnostic thought had been thoroughly debunked long ago.  It should have been just quietly forgotten, instead it was resurrected from the dead with help from the just mentioned unschooled Baptists as the supporting doctrine for the Holy Spirit!!! No wonder so many of our leaders along with everybody else get lost in doctrines that make sinfulness  ordinary. Their Baptist doctrine used to be called "the sinning religion", and for good reason.  And it did not come from Calvin. It came from a much more recent and a more malign source than you might suspect. But most of this is kept buried in textbooks and seminaries, and so it doesn't matter.   Alas, that might be true except for the fact that it keeps all these various churches thinking they already have the answers......
